Cry Baby Cry…

Monday, July 14th, 2008

So the latest issue of The New Yorker magazine published a political cartoon on the cover of Obama as a muslim and his wife as a terrorist. The Obama campaign called the cartoon “tasteless and offensive”. Maybe those are his words and maybe they are the words of someone from his campaign, but by golly this pearl-clutching is getting out of hand.

If you’re going to be the President of the United States, whatever party you’re affilitated with, you are guaranteed to be criticized; often harshly, often unfairly, for at least four years.
I couldn’t handle that, so I don’t run for president. If you’re going to run, you better be up to it.

Somehow, I think Obama was only peripherally aware of the cartoon, and probably just shrugged it off. Of course, why let an opportunity go by? Let’s pretend to be offended and elicit sympathy from the public!

Of course, I could be totally wrong and Obama may very well have been offended by the whole thing. If it really got to him though, he may want to rethink a career in politics.

As a side note, conservatives are exposed to this type of redicule, usually worse, on a daily basis. The media doesn’t wait for an election year to compare Republicans to Hitler.

All in all, just another tempest in a teapot. Much ado about nothing. Another blip in an otherwise boring election in the eyes of an increasingly jaded public

Happy Independence Day!!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

A Happy Independence Day to everyone, and a special shout out to my friend Angry Jack. Check out his blog if you haven’t already. Veterans like Angry Jack are the reason why this country is still around to celebrate another birthday.

And for all of America’s enemies, foreign and domestic. Best walk away. America is a country that kicks butt and takes names. We’re a tolerant people, sometimes to a fault, but we have a breaking point. Watch your back.

Bud Extra

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

So we’re on the eve of the Independence Day long weekend. I went to the liquor store to stock up on a few things (a friend and fellow Bob Dylan fan turned me on to the taste of Southern Comfort! ;) ). I noticed this new (to me) product in the coolers. Bud Extra. Beer with caffeine, ginseng and guarana extract and natural raspberry flavor.

My take on this product is…meh. I give credit to Budweiser for introducing this product, but it really isn’t anything new. There were alcoholic energy drinks long before Bud Extra, and young adults were mixing vodka and Red Bull long before that. But hey, if the customers are mixing their own alcohol/energy concoctions, then that’s a screaming opportunity for a new product.

It seems to me that alcohol and energy are a potentionally dangerous combination. If you drink enough alcohol, you’ll eventually fall asleep or pass out; kind of like nature’s own failsafe system to prevent you from doing something really dangerous or stupid. Energy drinks seem to override the failsafe mechanism and keep you up and active.

Oh well. Tastes pretty good though.

Here A Corey, There A Corey

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Season two of ‘The Two Coreys’ debuted tonight (10PM on A&E). I have to admit, either it’s a sign of aging, or too many brain cells killed with alcohol, I’m enjoying this show, both for the nostalgia trip and the cautionary tale.

For those of you not in the area ;) , ‘The Two Coreys’ is a ‘reality show’ following the lives of two former best friend child actors, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Both Coreys were very successful at a young age. Both had thousands of young female fans. They made several movies together, and were the best of friends.

However, all things must come to an end. The Coreys got older, the fans left them, the work offers dried up. Both actors had problems with drug addictions.

Now here is the funny part. Corey Feldman - usually portrayed as the ‘bad boy’ of the two, both on and off screen, appears to have gotten his act together. He has overcome his addictions, married an attractive fashion model, and is producing television and films.

Ironically, Corey Haim - perceived as the sweet, innocent one back in the day, is a walking train wreck. He is still out of work, frequently loses his temper, and still has many addiction-related problems; like blaming everyone but himself for his misfortunes.

I’m waiting for Feldman to snap and pop Haim in the mouth. Serves him right.

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I hope Haim scores nothing less than a full fleged comeback, but at this point, he’s looking like a younger version of Leif Garrett

Parasitic Leeches Get What They Deserve

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Some loser paparazzi, who make a living by invading people’s privacy, were on a Malibu beach trying to get a picture of overrated actor Matthew McConaughey. A group of locals confronted them and forced them off the beach. A link to the story is below.

Now I’m not generally in favor of mob rule, but once in awhile, a little frontier justice can be a good thing.

Maybe this incident will inspire these morons to seek a more honorable profession.

Tim Russert 1950 - 2008

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Today the world lost a giant among journalists. REAL journalists, not amateur bloggers ;)
‘Meet the Press’ host Tim Russert died today at 58 of a heart attack. He and his family had just returned from Italy celebrating his son’s graduation from Boston College.

Sundays are much busier for me these days, but back when I had few cares, I would watch ‘Meet the Press’ after ‘Fox News Sunday’. Russert was always dogged in his interviews, always pressing for an answer when politicians gave him double talk. Tim didn’t always get his answer, but at least he always tried.

Of course, it is always tragic when someone is taken from us so young. Russert’s death is even more poingent happening so close to Father’s Day. Russert was not shy about his father’s positive influence on him, and was a fiercely devoted family himself.

Tim will be sorely missed. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Russert family in this sad time.

First Train Wreck of the Summer Movie Season?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

I’m seeing the previews for Mike Meyer’s new movie ‘The Love Guru’, which opens this month. This is looking like a complete train wreck. Remember how terrible Austin Powers 3 was? Me neither, because I didn’t see it. It looked that bad.

‘Love Guru’ is going to make ‘Goldmember’ look like ‘Citizen Kane’ :(

Now for a GOOD summer movie, go see Iron Man! Watch for the special cameo appearance by my main man Jim Cramer! :)
