6 Miles, 57 Minutes, 10 Seconds

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Not bad!! I was thinking that after the speed work yesterday that I would be dog tired and slow today, assuming I got out and ran at all.

Today I changed my route a little bit and avoided one traffic light. I got lucky on two others and hardly had to wait at all. Looks like that really affected my time well! ;)

6 miles in 57 minutes is about a 9:30 pace! I don’t think I’ve ever sustained a pace like that over 6 miles! Then again, maybe my Garmin GPS burped or something. Either way, I’ll take it. It’s an encouraging sign that my training is going somewhat well. Looks like the speed work is working!

Of course, I’m paying for it now. I have more discomfort in my ankles, and my legs are sore. Tomorrow calls for an 8.5 mile tempo run. I’m not looking for a 9:30 pace for that one!

Stay tuned…

Interval Training Today

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

This morning was interval training, and boy did it kick me in the butt. For all of those following my training, here’s what I did:

Run 1/4 mile at a 5K pace
Walk for 30 seconds

Run 1/2 mile at a 10K pace
Walk for 90 seconds

Run 3/4 mile at a 10K pace
Walk for 2 minutes

Run 1 mile at a 10K pace
Walk for 3 minutes

Run 3/4 miles at a 10K pace
Walk for 2 minutes

Run 1/2 mile at a 10K pace
Walk for 90 seconds

Run 1/4 mile at a 5K pace
Cool down and stretch.

Now for the first 5 or so training segments, I was wheezing again, dog tired, and my legs were hurting. The last 2 running segments, however, I began to feel that “runner’s high” I keep hearing about. Then again, I may have just been dizzy and was about to pass out! :)

All in all, about 4 miles worth of running in 44:07.10. Not too bad when you consider all those walking breaks!

Tomorrow calls for an “easy” 6 mile run. With the way my legs are feeling right now, it will be anything but easy. My legs are still sore, and I have minor pain in my ankles. We’ll see.

Stay tuned…

Pool It!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

More pool work today; 45 minutes. Good cross training, and an opportunity to work out any lactic acid left over after Saturday’s long run.

Feel fatigued, but not tired. Have some discomfort in my ankles, but I think I’ll be OK for tomorrow morning’s workout.

Tomorrow morning: Interval training!

Incredibles

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I’m watching the Incredibles on the Disney channel. For a “kids” movie, I sure do like this one. Probably one of Pixar’s best. :)

Say Bye Bye Brett

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Seriously, as a die hard New England Patriots fan, you can understand that I have no love for the Green Bay Packers, especially Brett Favre.

Thankfully, Brett retired after the end of last season, or so I thought. This has to be one of the quickest changes of heart I’ve ever seen. Now, Brett is in the undesireable position of wanting to come back to a tesam that doesn’t want hime back. Now there is talk about him playing for another team. I’ve heard rumblings that the Jets and the Broncos were interested, but that’s it. Maybe one of these teams is so desperate for a trip to the playoffs they’ll blow big money on a few aging star players for “one last shot”, but I don’t see many teams lining up for a quarterback whose best days are clearly behind him.

Face it Brett, it’s over. You had a career that millions of kids can only dream of. You have a Super Bowl ring (that Parcells pretty much handed to you, but that’s another post). It’s time to salvage what’s left of your dignity and exit. Don’t be like Joe Montana who ended his career with Kansas City when everyone in the country remembers him with the 49ers. For crying out loud DONT be like Michael Jordan and try for upteen inglorious comebacks and dilute your legacy; also be sure to stay safely away from minor league baseball ;)

It’s time to say good night, Brett. Don’t forget to take your Prilosec before you go to bed.

16 Miles, 2 Hours, 50 Minutes

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Ugh. I feel like garbage. But I made it. Today’s long run is an improvement over Sunday’s long run of 14 miles. I wanted to try for 17 miles today and split the difference between last week’s 14 and 20 (where I should be by now). Even though I only made it to 16 miles, today was the farthest I’ve run since the marathon last October. Definitely making progress. To think that is was only 5 months ago that I struggled to run 2 miles!

I’m still not signed up for the Hartford Marathon. I haven’t decided if I’ll run it this year. I’m definitely training as if I was though.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Stay tuned…

Nancy Grace-less

Friday, July 25th, 2008

I’m watching this sad story unfold regarding missing 3 year old girl Caylee Anthony. Sadly, things are not looking good. Unfortunately, it looks like everybody is guilty of something here. The mother clearly doesn’t appear to be reacting like a typical mother who is missing her young child.

The grandmother clearly knows more than she is letting on.

In the middle of it all, however, is Nancy Grace-less. This woman, in my opinion, already has blood on her hands. A few years ago another mother reported her child missing and appeared on Ms. Grace’s show to appeal to the public to help find him. Ms. Grace instead grilled the heartbroken mother about why she was not being more forthright with the police about her whereabouts and activities at the time her son was kidnapped. The mother, already distraught over her young son’s disappearance, took her own life the next day.

But hey, let’s see another picture of the twins!

Rest Day Today

Friday, July 25th, 2008

I’m resting today. I still have a little discomfort in my legs from the speedwork on Tuesday and the 8.5 miles yesterday. I’m going to get a good night’s sleep tonight and try for an early start in the morning.

Wish me luck!

8.5 Miles, 1 Hour 35 Minutes

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Today was a “Tempo” day. I don’t know what that means, so I just ran. I didn’t use any Runners GU. I never use it on weekday run, which usually don’t go more than 8 miles. I have plenty of stored fuel in form of fat that I would prefer my body use instead of a sugar paste. ;)

There had been some thunderstorms in the area the night before, so the air was cool, but foggy. The weather was cloudy for the first 6 miles, but then the heavens opened up :( I did the last 2.5 miles in a downpour. Oh well. At least it kept me cool! ;)

Tomorrow is a rest day. Saturday is a long run day. Training schedule calls for 20 miles, but I’m way behind on my training, so I’ll try for 16.

Stay tuned…

Rest Today

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

I’m taking a rest day today. Last night, my legs were killing me. My knees were in especially bad shape. Moreover, I was just dog gone tired. Today calls for an “Easy 5 miles”. Sorry, but I think if I tried it, I’d be overtaxing my body and risking injury. So after 3 straight days of training, I’m resting.

Thursday calls for a “Tempo” run (whatever that is) of 8.5 miles. I’ll rest again on Friday and try to get back on my regular schedule with a long run on Saturday.

Cool runnings. Stay tuned… :)
