They Might Have Been Giants

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

I’ve been on a wikipedia fueled nostalgia trip lately. I’ve been wikiing all my favorite 80’s pop culture items including Transformers and G.I. Joe. I’ve also caught up on one of my favorite bands from the 80’s, They Might Be Giants. I loved their lo-fi, DIY, independant sound and their quirkly lyrics combined with the Johns’ nasally voices.

This was nerd rock before Weezer made it cool (excuse me, “kewl”). Their video for “Don’t Let’s Start” was filmed in my hometown of Queens :), though the duo hailed from Brooklyn. I like a few songs on their 1986 debut, self titled album, but it was their follow-up, 1988’s ‘Lincoln’ that really did it for me…and the rest of the world. The single “Ana Ng” was catchy as all git out. Heck, even the video was in heavy rotation on MTV (you know, back when MTV actually PLAYED MUSIC VIDEOS!!!, but that’s another rant altogether).

Their 3rd album, 1990’s Flood was released to mixed reviews, but I still liked it, especially ‘Birdhouse In Your Soul’. Loved that song. Then they began to lose me.

1991’s Apollo 18 was OK at best. There were a few catchy songs, but I didn’t like how they moved away from jsut guitar, accordion and drum track to a full on band. The sound and the songs had gotten heavier. I dare say that this album sounded more industrial than alternative. TMBG had become ‘just another band’. I did like the ‘Fingertips’ song: 21 individual tracks that would be interspersed through the longer songs when the CD player was in shuffle mode. Most of those 5 second songs were catchier than the full length tracks, probably because they more closely resembled the older,
quirkier sound I was used to. Other than that, Apollo 18 just wasn’t that great.

I had my hopes up for 1994’s ‘John Henry’. No avail. Just another rock band CD. I liked ‘End of the Tour’, ‘Meet James Ensore’ and ‘Rocket To the Moon’, but the rest of the album was dead to me. After that, I just stopped caring about the band. Grunge was on it’s last legs and I was one of the last to board the train, getting into Nirvana just before Cobin killed himself.

I had heard that TMBG did the theme song to ‘Malcom in the Middle’; a crap show that allegedly “SAVED THE SITCOM!!”. Did the sitcom need saving? I didn’t know. I was too busy watching ‘Friends’ and enjoying it. My bad.
Anyhoo, the crappy theme song to a crappy show further turned me off to the band. One thing that crept back into my mind was TMBG’s ‘Dial-a-Song’. Ever since the VERY early days of the band, you could call their apartment in Brooklyn at 718-387-6962 and hear one of their demos on their answering machine. Sometimes the band would change the song several times a day. I remember calling the number from college several times. :) Ahhh, those were the days.
TMBG’s Dial-a-song persisted for several more years. Lately, I had the urge to dial it again. Just to see what the band was up to. Surely it was still around, wasn’t it? I picked up my cell (thank goodness for free nights and weekends! :) ) and dialed.

It started to ring.

and ring…

and ring…

and ring.

I suspected the worst, and after a little Googling, my worst fears were confirmed. The Dial-a-song was no more. Done away with in favor of a monthly ‘podcast’. Crap. Just another end of an era from my younger days. I know I had written
off the band a long time ago, but I always liked how you could pick up the phone and hear a song. Yeah, the internet is the future, (heck, it’s the present!), but I always liked the low-tech things like the phone. You know, before they had
robots working for Bank of America answering them and robots working for politicians dialing them, usually during dinner. :(

Not too long ago I heard some Dunkin Donuts commercials on the radio. The voices, the quirly lyrics, the melodies sounded a little familiar. After some more Googling, my fears were confirmed. TMBG sold out again by writing and performing in 14(!) Dunkin’ Donuts spots. After some more wikiing, it looks like TMBG has REALLY sold out, recording multiple CD’s and DVD’s for young children, featuring songs about the ABC’s and 123’s. *Sigh*. OK, I understand how children are attracted to the quirkier things. But man, did TMBG have to catch a full-on terminal case of Kenny Loggins disease?

Why do artists always go soft when they get old and/or have kids? Who knows. Maybe because the fans from their early days have kids now and they want to hold to their old fans by appealing to their kids? Thank goodness for Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop and the Rolling Stones. They never got soft. May Red Embers never record a children’s album. Somebody kick me in the crotch if I’m seen singing anywhere NEAR the Micky Mouse club :(

So here’s to you, oh, Johns of They Might Be Giants. Enjoy your success. You’ve earned it, but I’m not following you into the playpen. I’ll stay here at the bar.

BAC SUX

Friday, June 20th, 2008

I am continuing to losing my shirt on BAC. Good grief, we’re down to $27.10!! How low can this thing go?!?! The dividend yield is closing in on 10%. If BAC doesn’t cut the dividend at the end of the month, I’ll be surpized.

They should have backed out of the Countrywide deal. :(

4 Miles, 39 Minutes, 11 Seconds

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Not bad for not having ran in 2 weeks. Tiredness, a local bear scare, business and just plain laziness kept me from running these past two weeks, but I’m BACK baby!!! I changed my route a little bit. I don’t start running right away now. I take about .2 miles as a walking warm up. I also didn’t have to wait for the light to change when I started out, and I was finished before I got back to the light on my back. I know. I’m probably the only person who includes “waiting for the light to change” into his running times. :)

Still considering another try at the Hartford Marathon this October. We’ll see…

Firefox 3.0 Released Today!

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

If you haven’t already done so, go to www.Mozilla.com and download the Firefox 3.0 web browser today. The Mozilla foundation is trying to set a world record for most downloads in a day, so let’s do our part to help Firefox 3.0 into the Guinness book!

Firefox 3.0 is MUCH better and faster than Internet Explorer, not to mention a WHOLE lot safer! Firefox 3.0 also has several improvements over its predecessor, including a memory leak fix. This should keep 3.0 from
slowing down from continued browsing.

Unfortunately, since this is a major release, those who are already using Firefox 2.0 will not receive this via automatic updates. You’ll have to download and install 3.0 yourself.

I’ve already downloaded it. In fact, I’m using it to post this entry. One thing that bugs me is the highlighted text box that displays a border within the text box. Very annoying. Otherwise, a solid release.

Have you already downloaded Firefox 3.0? Comment here and let us know what you think!

Another Run At a Perfect Season?

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Well sports fans, it’s never too early to talk about next season! Heck, I was talking about next season in February! On or about the 3rd at about….oh….9:30. Between shots of tequilla. :(

At any rate, I don’t think the New England Patriots will go 16-0 again this season. True to form, the NFL is throwing every obstacle in their way, including an awful bye in week 4. Last year, the Pats had their bye in week 9, which is about as good as it can get. Better to rest when you’re tired and the finish line is in sight. Having a bye after only 4 weeks in a 16 week season is about as productive as not resting your starters when you already clinched home field ;)

Some key games that I will be paying special attention to this season.

08/28 Pre-season week 4 at Giants: No big secret why this game is important to me. I’d look for Belichik to throw this one. Save it for the regular season.

09/14 Week 2 at Jets: Division game. Jets will be stronger this season, but I’m looking for New England to win this one.

09/21 Week 3 vs. Miami: Miami can ONLY be stronger this season ;). Expect the Patriots to dominate.

10/12 Week 6 at San Diego: A road game against a strong team. This might be the Patriots’ first loss of the season.

10/20 week 7 vs. Denver: Broncos could give New England a run for their money, but the New England offense should pull it out.

11/02 Week 9 at Inianapolis: All I can say is that I hope New England wipes the floor with these guys.

11/09 Week 10 vs. Buffalo: With all due respect to the late Tim Russert, I’m looking for another New England win in this division game ;)

11/13 Week 11 vs. Jets: A short week for the Patriots, but at least it isn’t a road game. New England wins this division game also

11/23 Week 12 at Miami: Even on the road, I see New England winning this division game

11/30 Week 13 vs. Pittsburgh: My friends from Grove City College don’t need me to say anything else. Being the one Patriots fan in a sea of rabid Steelers/Browns fans still has left a bad taste in my mouth. Pittsburgh just seems to have perennial playoff potential, but I’m hoping New England can win.

12/28 Week 17 at Buffalo: New England, hopefully with a playoff berth under their belts, should at least clinch the division with a win here.

Of course, what do I know? I’m not a prognosticator, I’m not even a journalist. Just a die hard fan of the Red, White and Blue ;)

GO PATS!!

Bootleg Series 8 Coming in September!!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Now this is good news for any Bob Dylan fan, but this is especially good for me. For years, I have been hoping against hope for an installment of the Bootleg Series that included more recent songs. As much as I love
Dylan’s 60’s work (and who doesn’t?), I think is has been overemphasized. Dylan has done fantastic work in the 70’s (Blood on the Tracks, Desire), the 80’s (Shot of Love, Infidels, Empire Burlesque) the 90’s (Time Out of Mind) and the 00’s (Love and Theft, Modern Times). In fact, the 80’s onward is my most favorite Bob career segment. I almost never listen to Bob’s 60’s output. Why bother? I get inundated with it by the radio, the TV, the tour T-shirts and merchandise and, until recently, Bob’s own Bootleg Series. Now, finally, he is opening up the vaults of his recent stuff. Woo hoo!

As with most Bootleg Series releases, this will comprise of 2 discs. Below is a partial track listing courtesy of the www.ExpectingRain.com message boards.

Bootleg Series Vol. 8 (release date Sep. 2008) – collated information from Belgian press report (”De Standaard”, June 9, 2008):

CD1 (1989–1993):
- Dignity (piano demo from “Oh Mercy” sessions)
- God Knows (piano demo “Oh Mercy” sessions)
(five outtakes from the “Oh Mercy” sessions in all)
-TV Talkin’ Song (unreleased take from “UTRS” sessions)
- Polly Vaughn (Bromberg sessions ‘92)
- Rise Again (Bromberg sessions ‘92)
(+ more from the Bromberg sessions ‘92)
- 32.20 Blues (outtake from “World Gone Wrong” sessions)
(+ more outtakes from the “Good As I Bee To You” and
“World Gone Wrong” sessions)

CD2 (1997–2006):
- Girl From The Red River Shore (outtake from “Time Out Of Mind”)
“Could be the strongest song Dylan has written in years.
The ghost ballad is an epic number where Duke Robillard’s guitar
and Jim Dickinsons piano are a contrast to Dylan’s hallucinatory
and ghostlike voice.”
- Shake Sugaree (outtake from “Time Out Of Mind”)
- Mississippi (outtake from “Time Out Of Mind”)
- ‘Cross The Green Mountain (the “complete version with 8 verses”)
- 2 unnamed demos from “Modern Times”
(+ more)

Bob must have known my 35th birthday (ugh) was coming up! :)

Couldn’t Close the Deal

Condolences to the Boston Celtics after their heartbreaking loss tonight to the Los Angeles Lakers. Boston is still up in the series 3-2. Here’s hoping they can win game 6. Go Bahstahn!!!

Tim Russert 1950 - 2008

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Today the world lost a giant among journalists. REAL journalists, not amateur bloggers ;)
‘Meet the Press’ host Tim Russert died today at 58 of a heart attack. He and his family had just returned from Italy celebrating his son’s graduation from Boston College.

Sundays are much busier for me these days, but back when I had few cares, I would watch ‘Meet the Press’ after ‘Fox News Sunday’. Russert was always dogged in his interviews, always pressing for an answer when politicians gave him double talk. Tim didn’t always get his answer, but at least he always tried.

Of course, it is always tragic when someone is taken from us so young. Russert’s death is even more poingent happening so close to Father’s Day. Russert was not shy about his father’s positive influence on him, and was a fiercely devoted family himself.

Tim will be sorely missed. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Russert family in this sad time.

Red Embers Reunion Show Recap

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

So I never told anyone about the Red Embers reunion (sort of) gig on May 9! I’d have to say things went pretty darn well. I arrived at the Avon, CT Starbucks (late as usual) in the pouring rain, parked as close as I could (read: far away :( ) and proceeded to unload my ample gear. Acoustic guitar, electric bass my “little green monster amp” (actually, a Carvin practice amp that I love to death). Some music stands and a spaghetti factory of cables, power strips and extention cords that, despite our best efforts to prevent, always become entangled. So I wheeled in all my stuff to the corner. Bill S. was waiting, and already setting up our Zoo TV multimedia presentaion!! Actually, it was a cool projector hooked up to a laptop showing different animated powerpoint slides for each song. Bill hung a bedsheet behind us as a lo fi video screen.

Our ringers (ahem, “special guests”), Bob on guitar and Nate on violin & bass arrived shortly after and we were well on our way to setting up. Bill helped my untangle some cables and extension cords out of the pasta pile on the floor like some deranged re-enactment of that scene in ‘Lady and the Tramp’.

Finally, after endless hunting for power outlets, testing mikes, tuning up, checking volume and doing a few sound checks, we were ready to go. Well before our 8PM start time!

We sounded great, if I say so myself. :) We went through most of the Red Embers “hits” like “June”, “Pressing On”, “Invisible Arms” and “Road Trip”. Of course, there were the requisite covers Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody”, U2’s “Kite”, and Coldplay’s “Message”.

We even taped the show. Unfortunately, I’m not in it ;). We couldn’t get the camera far away enough, so I’m chopped off of the side. Oh well. I hope to have some clips on Youtube soon.

So here we are. Back again. A few members short, a different sound, but still standing. Celebrating our 8th year together.

Stay tuned…
