Running Injury! Need Advice!

As you can tell from the blog, I hadn’t done any running since June 1, when I completed a 1/2 marathon. I ran 5 miles yesterday morning no problem. This morning I tried to run 5 miles again. At about 3.4 miles, I felt a shooting pain in my left leg. The pain ran from my hip to my heel along the outside of my leg; though most of the pain was in my hip. I had the same injury (same leg I think) last fall when I was doing my last long run a week before my first marathon. I was in pain for weeks (still completed the marathon though! :) )

OK all you runners out there, I’m sure someone here has had a similar injury. Basically what I’m looking to find out is

1) What is this?
2) What can I do/ingest to heal it faster?
3) How do I prevent in the future.

I’m running my 2nd marathon this fall, and I would rather not have to walk the 2nd half due to an injury.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds to me like an ITB injury, a tendon that usually runs from your hip to just below the knee. I may be off i nmy assesment, but you may have just that or wore, that combined with something else. Sad to say, but the best route is to stay off it for a while and when you finally feel well enough to resume any athletic activity (use your own barometer), stretch like the ballerinas do, one leg up on an elevated surface, lean to the left, lean to the right. Also standing feet well more than shoulder width apart, also like a ballerina, raise your left arm like you have a question for teacher, but palm facing to the right and bend as far as you can over to your right side as though you were trying to put your left palm on the surface of a table to your right. hold that position for roughly 10 seconds. It’s the only way I know to get to that region of your body (outer surface of either leg). Give it a try and good luck!
