John Stewart 1940 - 2008
No, not The Daily Show host. To be frank, I never heard of this guy until he died. Then again, that’s the mainstream media for you. Nevertheless, this guy has left an indelible mark on popular music.
In the 1960’s Stewart was part of the popular folk group The Kingston Trio. Stewart left the band to pursue a solo career, pioneering “country rock” or the “Americana” sound that I love so much.
But Stewart will probably be best known for writing the Monkees’ hit “Daydream Believer”. Those who know me know I love the Monkees almost as much as like Dylan (I know, I’m weird, I heard). I’ve always loved the Monkees’ version. Truthfully, it’s the only version I’ve known.
Until now.
Check out this YouTube clip of one of John Stewart’s final performances. As you may expect from a folk singer turned country rock pioneer, Stewart’s take is slower, more melancholy. He truly turns the song on it’s head, and gives it a whole different spin. After a few listens, I like Stewart’s version just as much as the Monkees.

Yeah, man, the 70’s…….
I have felt lately through some of the old movies (got to watch ‘Hammer’ the other day) and listening to some of the music, that the 70’s was a far better time to live than even now. Quite frankly, I like the Americana thing myself as well (although its hard to find music categorized formally under that genre). I can’t remember which TV show/movie it was in when those two guys were on choppers side by side, and one had the American flag on the tank……. THOSE were the days. Mutton chops, long hair, earthy music, no cell phones, PDAs, Blackberries……. That would have been a great time to be the age I am now. (Second only to living in the wild west, you know, Billy the Kid era) I don’t care what anyone says, the cloths were awesome, the music was DEFINATELY awesome, the bikes were awesome, (I’d trade in a brand new Harley on an old Shovel Head any day!) and it was free livin’, man! Life was far simpler, more personal and I think a lot more free than it is now in a world with EO and having to watch your mouth, and so on. I think music like John Stewart and Country Joe and the Fish, Three Dog Night, Joe Walsh, and here’s a guy you have to listen to his music and you can just hear the 70’s………. Terry Reid, the would-have-been lead singer of Led Zeppelin.
I was sad when Brad Delp offed himself, although he was more closely associated with the ‘corporate rock’ of the early 80’s, Boston emerged in the 70’s. Wouldn’t have wanted to be in the bread lines of the 70’s but sure wouldn’t mind revisiting the gas prices of the 70’s, that way we could afford to drive the seemingly all V-8 70’s car line-up. I’m waiting for mutton chops and the hard-part hairstyle to come back. Long live the 70’s!!!

Hells to the yes!! For all the dismissals of bell bottoms, the 70’s and 80’s were a more innocent time. Or was that because we were kids and our parents protected us from the real world?

Yeah, Brad Delp’s suicide was a shock. As was Kevin Dubrow’s death (cocaine overdose).

The sad thing is, the kids growing up with today’s music don’t know anything different. If they had our music to listen to, there’s no way Britney and Justin would have careers!

I think part of the reason that good music flourished in the 70’s was that we didn’t have the instantaneous media we have today. Most of the all time great artists had first, even second albums that fared not so well. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Dylan, Zep. I think if the record companies know how much money they were losing on these first albums, they would have dropped all these artists!
