“Christ For President” (oooohhhhhh controvertial!!)

I’m lazy today. Haven’t had any exercise since the marathon and that was nearly 2 months ago. All this talk about the presidential election, which is MORE THAN A YEAR AWAY!!, got me thinking about this song. It’s an unfinished song by Woody Guthrie, which was finished up and recorded by Brit folk singer Billy Bragg, backed up by U.S. formerly roots rock presently trippy psychedelia band Wilco. It’s found on their album “Mermaid Avenue”

For those who don’t know, Woody Guthrie was a U.S. populist folk singer, popular in the 1940’s. Probably his most famous song is “This Land Is Your Land”, sung by school kids everywhere. Woody was also a huge early influence on Bob Dylan. Woody also has a famous folk singer son, Arlo. Arlo’s famous songs include the half hour “Alice’s Restaurant” and “Sprit Of New Orleans”

So buy this album in an independent record store if you can, or from iTunes if you have to and take a listen!

Lyrics reprinted without permission. You’ll never take me alive.

Christ for President
Words by Woodie Guthrie

Let’s have Christ our President
Let us have him for our king
Cast your vote for the Carpenter
That they call the Nazarene

The only way
We could ever beat
These crooked politician men

Is to cast the moneychangers
Out of the temple
Put the Carpenter in

Oh it’s Jesus Christ our President
God above our king
With a job and pension for young and old
We will make hallelujah ring

Every year we waste enough
To feed the ones who starve
We build our civilization up
And we shoot it down with wars

But with the Carpenter
On the seat
Way up in the capitol town

The USA
Be on the way
Prosperity bound
