Happy Thanksgiving!!!
31 Years ago today, on Thanksgiving night, The Band held its final concert at the Winterland in San Francisco. It must have been a wonderful experience for those who were there. A full Thanksgiving meal was served to the audience. After that, waltzing lessons were available from professional dancers. Then, the main event. The Last Waltz as it was later called in the concert film directed by Martin Scorcese. The Band played their hits like “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, some of their more obscure songs, as well as the songs from some of their famous friends who showed up to help them take it home. Some featured performers included: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins and Muddy Waters.
As guitarist Robbie Robertson put it “We wanted it to be more than a concert. We wanted it to be a celebration”. And it was. If you haven’t had the opportunity, rent The Last Waltz. You won’t be sorry!
