Kevin Dubrow 1955 - 2007: Cum On Feel the Sadness

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Well, you know I had to comment on this, didn’t you? The Quiet Riot singer was found in his home dead of “unknown causes”. May very well be a heart attack or some previously unknown ailment. At least, at this point, doesn’t seem to be a suicide or drug overdose.

What can I say? You can make all the jokes you want, but Cum On Feel the Noize was a great song. It paved the way for metal as a viable commercial genre.

It occurred to me earlier today that I shook this man’s hand as he wandered around the concessions area at The Meadows in Hartford (now called the Dodge or Careerbuilder.com ampitheater, or whatever other corporate namesake is has this week). Unfortunately, I had totally missed the band’s set, and walked in only to hear the last few notes of “Bang Your Head”. I was working late, not for extra pay, but out of obligation, on a thankless project. I wish I had left the work and made it to the show. Now I’ll never get to see that set that I missed. But that’s life, isn’t it? Sometimes, you just miss things and you don’t get to make them up later. I guess that’s a lesson to learn. Gather ye rose petals while you may?

God Bless Kevin Dubrow.

11 - 0!! Congratulations AFC East Champs!

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

*Whew!* Just squeaked by tonight. But hey, a win is a win!! I knew it was not going to be anywhere near the blowout Vegas was hoping for. The 25 point line was ridiculous. Philly played unusually well tonight, and the Pats played unusually badly. Yet, the Pats still made it. Next week is at Baltimore.

Now about that first round bye… :)

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

31 Years ago today, on Thanksgiving night, The Band held its final concert at the Winterland in San Francisco. It must have been a wonderful experience for those who were there. A full Thanksgiving meal was served to the audience. After that, waltzing lessons were available from professional dancers. Then, the main event. The Last Waltz as it was later called in the concert film directed by Martin Scorcese. The Band played their hits like “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, some of their more obscure songs, as well as the songs from some of their famous friends who showed up to help them take it home. Some featured performers included: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins and Muddy Waters.

As guitarist Robbie Robertson put it “We wanted it to be more than a concert. We wanted it to be a celebration”. And it was. If you haven’t had the opportunity, rent The Last Waltz. You won’t be sorry!

10 - 0!! Bring On Philly!

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

It’s official. The New England Patriots have become the New York Yankees of football, complete with an “Evil Empire”. It’s amazing. Whoever would have thought in the mid 90’s when the Pats were at the very apex of sucking that they would eventually be hated by the whole country because they win too often and by too much.

Well, like Loverboy, I’m Lovin’ Every Minute Of It. Available now at iTunes! Maybe. I haven’t checked, and don’t plan to.

Ever notice that if a team like Green Bay wins by 46 points, it’s a “blowout”, but if the Patriots win by the same number of points it’s called “running up the score”?

Dick Wilson 1916 - 2007

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Ahh. Mad props to Dick Wilson who made nearly 500 commercials spanning 20 years for toilet paper. To be honest, I didn’t know this guy was still alive, so it’s kind of a shock that he died today at 91.

I know he had other roles in television and movies, but this series of commercials made him an icon. When you compare it to the movies and TV being made today, shilling for toilet paper is actually a step up.

…And Sometimes You Just Plain WIN!!!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Looks like this is it folks. I can’t say too much right now, or probably ever. Suffice it to say: it happened. I found love. She loves me. She told me so. I think this is it, boys. Not just love, but THE ONE.

So THIS is how it feels!! Now I get it. Now I get it.

No Recount…

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Now that the election’s over, I can talk about it. I ran for office in my old hometown. Not for mayor or anything like that; one of the undercard jobs. I was running against an established politician who had previously served on the board of selectmen for many years. I did manage to squeak past the guy in his home district, but I got my butt handed to me in the other three. In all, I ended up with about 2700+ votes; about 38%. Not bad considering I don’t know that many people!

Oh well. Hey, 2009 is just around the corner! ;)

Getting Crushed…

Monday, November 5th, 2007

So I finally liquidated my position out of EMKR a few months ago and decided I needed a financial. Bought into Bank of America (BAC) at $49.90. Well, you know what happened after that.

So this morning, I’m down 10% and counting so I figure it’s time to double down. I bought more at $44.90.

Well, you know what happened after that. Went down another 1.5% today.

Through all the subprime mess, the credit crunch and rising commodities prices, I’m still hanging in there. BAC isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I’m long on BAC and I think it’s a great financial company to be in. Citigroup (C) seems to be having far greater troubles.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride. Hopefully when it’s over, we’ll be richer than when we started! ;)

At least I know how to make money. When it comes to love, things just don’t work out. :(

9 - 0!!! Booyaa!!!

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Well, it was a close one. The Pats trailed for most of the game, and even well into the 4th quarter, but they pulled it out. Congratulations to the New England Patriots. Enjoy your upcoming bye week. We’ll see you in Buffalo in 2 weeks!
