Paying For Linux?

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Yep. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I finally shelled out $66 to join the Mandriva Club. That got me the “standard” membership, which allows me to download the first 4 CD’s of the “powerpack” version of the latest Mandriva. This comes with a bunch of proprietary drivers and commercial applications. Hopefully my graphics card will be detected and configured properly. I’d hate to have paid for linux for nothing. :(

Recovery - No Long Run This Weekend

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Ugh. Between being out until 2 Friday night, getting up at 7 Saturday morning to take my car to the shop, playing at Bill’s brother’s party, then being out until 2 Saturday night, I did a whole lot of nothing today. Actually, today didn’t even start until 11:30 when I woke up!
Probably just as well. I need to get back to the short runs during the week. I’m behind as it is. I’m going to run 6 miles tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

An Inconvenient Youth?

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

If you haven’t heard the news already, Al Gore’s son was arrested for driving 100 miles an hour in his Prius hybrid (!) and for possession of marijuana and prescription drugs.

While there is a temptation to engage in some schadenfreude over this, I do feel bad for Al Gore III. Having Al Gore for a dad can’t be any picnic.

But how the heck do you get a hybrid to go over 100mph? Must have been a steep downhill with a good tailwind.

It’s the Freakin’ Weekend, Baby I’m About To Have Me Some Fun!

A blessed shortened workweek. Got to love it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go out to the club and get my sexy on! ;)

You Got the Touch!! You Got the Powaaaahhhh!! Yeeeeaaahh!!

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Let me just say one thing about this. If you have not seen the Transformers movie yet (and it’s been over 24 hours since it came out! What’s keeping you?!?), you HAVE to see it. Yes, many of the autobots and decepticons look different. They don’t transform into the things they used to. Some of the backstory has changed. Why am I willing to forgive all this? They used Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime. For this, I forgive all else.

Kidding aside, despite the “reboot” of the Transformers, old school fans will not be disappointed. At the very worst, it’s an opportunity for us new-school old-fogey Gen-X’ers to indulge in some mass marketed nostalgia.

Autobots…Roll out.

Happy Birthday America!!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Today I give thanks to God for blessing me richly by allowing me to live in the greatest nation the world has ever known. Moreover, he allowed me to be born in the greatest city of the greatest nation: New York City. Even though I’m a Connecticut Yankee now, I still haven’t lost my New York roots (or my attitude! ;)  ). God has also blessed me with a great job, and a loving family.

Today, part of that family and I are going out to see the Transformers movie, then to the folks house for a barbeque.

Video Update

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

So today we looked at the footage we shot at the junkyard over the weekend. It look FANTASTIC! We’ve (read: Chris R. and Bill S.) have some work to do to get the video footage edited and synced with the audio we recorded on my still-in-mint-condition Tascam 424 Mk III. We’re going to post the video on YouTube in conjunction with our submission. It’s the same song as our previous video (”How It Ends”), but it’s a live version, so it’s a little different. American Idol here we come!! ;)

Mad Shout Out to Jon!

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Last night, I had the pleasure of receiving an email through Myspace from an old college buddy I hadn’t seen since the 10 year reunion at Grove City College nearly 2 years ago. Jon found me through a mutual friends Myspace page - that of Tom, another college friend of mine as well as a patient and wise running mentor.

Here’s to you Jon. Guess who’s radio show I’m listening to now? ;)

13.1 Miles - 2 hours, 9 minutes, 49 seconds

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

That’s not a typo. Today, as part of my marathon training, I ran a half marathon. That’s 13.1 miles for you newbies ;). 2 hours 9 minutes, 49 seconds. That’s a record for me. Compare that with my time from the half marathon last year of 2 hours, 41 minutes. Yeah. I shaved a half hour off my time. I never ran 13.1 miles without stopping or walking before. Not when I ran the half marathon last year, and certainly not when I was training for it. I can’t believe it. Of course, it would be a Chris Boorman thing if I didn’t do something stupid to compliment it. When I finally staggered home, I drank half a cup of Starbucks. Felt queasy for 2 hours afterward LOL! Oh well. Lesson learned.

I can’t wait for the half marathon this year. Still a little nervous about the full marathon in October. Running 13.1 miles is one thing. Doing it twice in a row is quite another! Stay tuned….
