My Calves Are Screaming…
First, some housekeeping items:
Yes. I’m changing the timestamp on some of these posts to fill in some gaps. Can’t go too long without posting, you know! Makes the blog look bad!
So, just like corporations with stock options, I’m backdating my blog posts.
This past weekend I went to the specialty running store, The Run In in Rocky Hill, CT to get my annual new pair of running shoes. I bought a pair of New Balance 767’s. They fit well in the store. I even ran up and down the outside of the strip mall where the store was located before I bought them. I ended up paying about 1/3 less for the New Balances than I did for my Nike Shox last year.
But man, it’s been tough getting used to these new shoes. First of all, I miss the overly large spring in the heel of the Nikes. I never really noticed the springiness (is that a word?) of the Nikes until I didn’t have it with the New Balances.
Second, the New Balances have an insert that’s supposed to give stability. The edge of the insert curves slightly up to the side of the shoe, so there’s an edge right near my heel. On my first trip on the treadmill on Monday, the edge, that I hadn’t even noticed when testing the shoes out, caused blisters on my heels. Ouch! That was a painful 3 miles.
So on Wednesday morning, I decided to remove the insert that was giving me trouble. Another bad idea. There was now too much room in my shoes. I don’t know what that did, but the 4 treadmill miles I did on Wednesday didn’t help much. My calves are in PAIN!
So yesterday, I went to WalMart and bought some comfort insoles. The foam kind that you trim to the size of your shoe. I tried to put both pairs in my shoes, but that made them too tight. So I’ve got one pair in. I took a little run around half of my building. Everything seemed alright. Still miss the spring in my heel :(.
Tomorrow I go for 3 miles on the treadmill. We’ll see how it goes!

You’re evolving into having shoe preferences / modifying them, etc… that is a good step. You’re one step closer to building your own light saber. I swear by “Sof Sole’s,” but any brand is better than the factory insoles. They’re great for people under 25, but for old folks like you and I, the softer after-market soles go a long way towards comfort and pain reduction.
You’ll adapt to the “springlessness” - might even reduce some of the aches and pains.

Nike Factory Store…
I don’t agree with you in 100%, but you covered some good points regarding this topic…

Humph. Someone has to force me to read this post. It’s too big and boring. Brevity is the sister of talent, remember that.

I had easy time reading your blog. But it seems now it’s over :(. Man, this post sucks. I hope at least the next one won’t be.
