…and Warren Zevon was very, very good. Never heard of him? Not surprizing. Or maybe you heard the name, but not the music.
So for all you fans of Britney Spears and My Chemical Romance and other crap, I’ll dumb it down for you. You ever heard that song that’s played ad nauseum on the radio “Werewolves in London?”. OK that’s Warren Zevon. Never heard “Werewolves in London?” Then you probably never turned on a classic rock radio station in your life and you’re beyond help.
Normally, I eschew “Greatest Hits” albums, but pick up “Genius: The Best of Warren Zevon”. You’ll understand that Zevon was much more than “Werewolves in London”, and most of his stuff was way better. There’s so many great songs on that album. Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead. Splendid Isolation. Raspberry Beret (recorded with a Stipe-less R.E.M). Roland The Thompson Gunner. Boom Boom Mancini. All wonderful.
Then pick up his final album “The Wind”. Recorded while he was dying of cancer with the help of friends like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. If the final song “Keep Me In Your Heart For Awhile”, doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, you have no soul.
