My Money Blog

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

If you haven’t already, check out www.MyMoneyBlog.com. One couple’s journey toward financial freedom. The guy posts his liquid and total net worth on the side. Pretty ostentacious, but a gutsy move! He often lets his reader know about promotions and special offers from credit card companies so we can cut our expenses and make a little moolah as well. Nothing wrong with that!

In Praise Of “The Last Waltz”

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

One of the greatest rock movies of all times. This movie details the final concert by influential Canadian rock group The Band. The show featured a throng of special guests: Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Ronnie Wood, Van Morrison and Dr. John.

The music is incredible. To think that it all took place on a Thanksgiving night nearly 30 years ago.

The Aftermath…

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Unfortunately, the GOP didn’t do so well in the November elections. I blame most of it on many Republicans abandoning their conservative roots. It’s getting so that you can’t tell the Republicans from the Democrats anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of the lowest voter turnouts in history.

Hopefully the GOP can improve their chances for `08.

New Category: Childfreedom

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Yes. I’ll come out and say it: I don’t want kids, and I’m not going to. This doesn’t mean that I don’t want to get married. With God’s will, I’ll get married some day. I may need divine assistance to find a woman who feels the same way I do!

Occasionally I like to discuss issues facing childfree people like myself, so I’ve created a new category for it.

Happy (belated) Birthday Josh!

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

Belated Best Birthday wishes to my old high school buddy Josh. How many years is it now? Too many. I wonder if he knows I’m back in town?

Joel Osteen: “Your Best Life Now!”

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

This is a great book. My mom nagged me for two years to read it. I’m glad I finally caved ;) I’m currently re-reading it.

Osteen’s writing style is very much like his preaching. Very conversational, and not preachy. I’ve found his book both practical and uplifting.

Available at fine book retailers everywhere. ;)

Get This Album: Jeff Lynne: “Armchair Theatre”

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

The Traveling Wilbury’s project seemed to have invigorated the careers of everyone involved, that includes the one you probably can’t name: Jeff Lynne: Uber-producer and former leader of ELO. His 1990 album, “Armchair Theatre” picks up where the Wilbury’s left off. Indeed all the other Wilburys, sans Dylan, make an appearance on this album. It’s pop music at it’s best. Upbeat songs, catchy melodies, proficient musicianship. Download it for free. If you like it, consider a purchase.

Shelter From The Storm

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

This is a backdated post. I’m posting twice a day to get this baby up to date. Can’t remember what I was doing back in November so let me just plug a great Dylan live album “Hard Rain”, released on September 1, 1976, this, at the time, best captures Dylan at his “Rolling Thunder Review” period. Some radical reworking of classics, and even some remaking of newer material on this album.

This was Dylan’s first official live album, quite a surprise, considering he had been recording since 1962.

For me, the standout track is “Shelter From the Storm”. Just compare this to the original version on Blood on the Tracks. They are as different as night and day, yet both are absolutely incredible. The live version is full of raw energy, with three guitarists buzzsawing away. Just listen to the way he sings “Everything up to that point had been left unresolved”. You won’t be able to hear that line any other way ;)
