I’ll take ‘arrogant jerks’ for $300, Alex

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

So all time Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings makes a few silly comments on his blog (!) about Jeopardy and Alex Trebek, insinuating the later is actually a robot. Michael Starr of the New York Post breaks the story wide, making a little too much of nothing, calling Jennings comments “bashing”. Jennings strikes back at Starr. Oooh catfight!

Not that a blog written by a complete nobody needs to offer any analysis on what’s already an overblown story, but if this has taught us anything it’s that 1) If you win $2.5 million on a game show, best to be diplomatic about it, and save any “humorous” barbs for other targets, and 2) The New York Post has sunk so low that it scavenges people’s blogs for “news”. Really? Nothing happening in the Middle East catch your eye the last few days? Actually, to be fair, I did buy the New York Post the other day. I had fish to wrap and a birdcage to clean. ;)

Easy come…easy go

Well, it’s a damn good thing I called my discount broker a 2nd time. Never call a discount broker on a weekend. Aparently that’s when the newbies are working. Got the REAL skinny on how options work (read: not in my favor). I knew it sounded too good to be true. Even with low commissions, you can’t make money unless you buy hundreds of shares, and that’s just not me. I’m hanging in there, looking for decent mutual fund. If any of you have any suggestions, email me, OK?

Arrested Development

No, not the quazi-spiritual rap group. (Whatever happened to Speech? Did he ever make up with Dionne Farris?) I’m referring to the defunct Fox series. I’m still mourning the loss. This show was so genuinely funny and clever, I’m surprized it wasn’t cancelled after the first episode. I like to call Arrested “the thinking man’s Seinfeld”. The two shows excelled at constructing absurd storylines, but Arrested Development succeeded where Seinfeld failed miserably: creating likeable characters. Even Gob (pronounced Job, as in the biblical figure), for all his scheming and stinginess had something redeeming about him. Plus it had Portia DeRossi for ogling!

Try as I might, though, I could never see Jason Bateman as a parent of a 14 year old. Part of me remembers him AS a 14 year old on….what was that show with Rhoda? The Hogan Family? Valierie’s Family? He still has his boyish looks. Anyone remember his series “It’s Your Move” from around 1984 or so? That lasted all of one season. I still thought it was funny. Course, my tastes were less discriminating back then :)

The pitter-patter of little feet…

Don’t know how much info I’m allowed to give out, but congratulations to our drummer on his new arrival! Alex is cute as a button!!

Early to bed….

Early to rise… Was up at 4AM today for an upper body workout. Because I take so many days off in between running, I only get to my upper body workouts about once a week. That’s all going to change after the marathon. I swear after Labor Day I’m driving my car everywhere! At any rate, I’m satisfied with my workouts for now. I just wish I could watch what I eat better!!

There are always ‘options’ ;-)

Hopefully should have some good news by the end of this week for any EMKR fans.

Still running like hell, though no longer for Syd…

Like I mentioned I hate Pink Floyd. Today, I reached my goal of 9.5 miles, and I got the camera phone pic to prove it. My pedometer may still be lying to me, but I’ll chance it. Heck, I FELT like I ran 9.5 miles, so I probably did. Naturally, there’s very little that doesn’t hurt right now :)

Tomorrow, I’m shooting for an early upper body workout.

Live from New York…

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

There’s a rerun on of Jason Lee hosting Saturday Night Live. Shame about Jason and his receding hair line. Bigger shame about his selling out. I guess ‘My Name Is Earl’ is OK, but he was so much better in the Kevin Smith movies…and with a full head of hair. ;)

Jason Lee and what's left of his hair

THIS was the special treat?!?

I just finished watching some of the 4th of July fireworks I recorded (on my homemade Tivo no less!). After the fireworks, the audience was treated (I would say subjected) to Liza Minelli singing “New York, New York”. Like an idiot, I deleted the video just before I thought it would make a great post for the BoormanBlog.

If any of you saw this performace, be sure to leave a comment on how horrified you were. Liza could only be described as a spaced-out, stumbling, arrogant, puffy train wreck.

Anyone can ruin a Sinatra standard, but it takes real talent to render a song as incoherently, disturbingly bad as Liza did.

Not to beat the woman down, she’s been through enough in her life. I certainly don’t consider myself a fan or a “hater” of her work, but damn.

Liza in better days.

Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash…

In the further adventures of the Chris Boorman Mutual Fund, I added to my position in Emcore (EMKR) yesterday. The announcement that they are selling off one of their divisions seems to have spooked investors, but I’m holding on until they announce earnings on Aug. 2.
