Arrested Development

No, not the quazi-spiritual rap group. (Whatever happened to Speech? Did he ever make up with Dionne Farris?) I’m referring to the defunct Fox series. I’m still mourning the loss. This show was so genuinely funny and clever, I’m surprized it wasn’t cancelled after the first episode. I like to call Arrested “the thinking man’s Seinfeld”. The two shows excelled at constructing absurd storylines, but Arrested Development succeeded where Seinfeld failed miserably: creating likeable characters. Even Gob (pronounced Job, as in the biblical figure), for all his scheming and stinginess had something redeeming about him. Plus it had Portia DeRossi for ogling!

Try as I might, though, I could never see Jason Bateman as a parent of a 14 year old. Part of me remembers him AS a 14 year old on….what was that show with Rhoda? The Hogan Family? Valierie’s Family? He still has his boyish looks. Anyone remember his series “It’s Your Move” from around 1984 or so? That lasted all of one season. I still thought it was funny. Course, my tastes were less discriminating back then :)
